Lack of Canberra dermatologists forcing skin cancer patients to travel across the border

Canberra dermatology patient John Scott gets more than 50 skin cancers a year because of an auto-immune condition called Berger’s disease.

He also recently discovered his first melanoma and travelled to Sydney to get it removed.

However, despite his many cancers, issues stemming from chemotherapy and handfuls of pills taken daily, Mr Scott was lucky in one respect: he managed to get a dermatologist in Canberra.

“It is so much easier when treatment is local, when a lot of the coordination is taken off your shoulders and you can start to relax and deal with reality,” he said.
